Biography
Yevgen Klimenko is a contemporary Ukrainian artist from Dnipro who lives and works in Kyiv. He works in painting, graphics and collage and is above all a master of expressive painting. He studied Easel Painting at the Theatre and Art College, where he earned a bachelor's degree, and at the Kharkiv State Academy of Design and Arts (2014–2015). From 2015 to 2020 he studied Easel Painting at the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture (NAOMA) in Kyiv, defending his Master's thesis in 2020.
His canvases come from deep immersion in his inner world. Their depth of colour and play of contrasts recall Oleg Holosiy, the innovator of the Ukrainian New Wave of the 1980s–1990s and a member of the "Paris Commune" art squat in Kyiv. Klimenko studied at the same art school in Dnipro as Holosiy and knows Holosiy's teacher personally. Like Holosiy, he keeps surprising the public with something unexpected.
Some of his works seem light and calm at first, but on closer look they reveal a strong, almost tearing tension. His approach is spontaneous: he creates as naturally as he breathes, guided by visions and intense emotions, drawing images from the subconscious. Since 2012 he has taken part in solo and group exhibitions and projects in Ukraine, Germany, the USA, South Korea, France, Portugal and Switzerland.
